What is the difference between a dental exam and a dental cleaning?

An exam is usually conducted by the doctor. We take a look at X-rays and examine intraorally to diagnose dental problems. The cleaning is typically done by the hygienist, who removes stains and buildups like plaque or tartar above the gums.

How long does a full dental exam take?

I would say 45 minutes to an hour. It depends.

How often should you have a dental exam and cleaning?

Ideally, every six months. Twice a year to ensure you are healthy and cavity-free.

How can a dentist tell if I have cavities?

X-rays are key. Sometimes if cavities are large enough, we can see them inside the mouth. But primarily, x-rays are essential, which is why they're so important.

Do dentists treat cavities on the first visit?

Usually, we like to start with cleanings first. However, if cavities are extensive and there's a risk of infection, we will address that immediately.

How do dentists know if I need a root canal?

X-rays are crucial here as well. A root canal is needed when a tooth is abscessed. This occurs if you have an infected nerve or if a cavity is very extensive, approaching the nerve, where removing decay may expose the nerve.

Are dental exams painful?

No, absolutely not.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for a dental exam?

No preparation is needed. Just show up, and we'll do the rest.
